Bike West Hartford is delighted to report that the Town is keeping up its Vision Zero momentum with meaningful, effective traffic calming infrastructure! Over the last few weeks we have seen several additions to our roadways that will make all road users safer, including:
- Bike lane delineating devices called “armadillos” on Fern near Morley Elementary School – this is a huge deal for cyclists!!
- A traffic circle near Aiken Elementary School and King Philip Middle School
- Continuing to add flexpost curb bump-outs at risky intersections
- New modular, inexpensive, quickly deployable speed bumps in the Town Hall parking lot

The last few years have been difficult for West Hartford. We have unfortunately lost too many members of our community, and as the recent crash on Albany Ave shows us, we still have much work to do. In the coming weeks, Bike West Hartford plans to step up our advocacy for a revamped neighborhood traffic calming program, because it is currently far too difficult for citizens to get simple interventions such as speed bumps on their neighborhood streets. We continue to call for increased, visible, urgent action from CT DOT. Too many injuries and deaths are occurring on high speed state roads that West Hartford has little control over.

Yet, there is much to celebrate with West Hartford’s road safety interventions this year! We are seeing meaningful improvements on our roadways which match the urgency of the problem. We also greatly appreciate the increased, visible enforcement efforts from our hard-working Police Department, and the public education efforts being undertaken by our Public Relations department. We are seeing some of the hard-won results of advocacy from our community, and we hope that you and your families feel safer this year moving around our town, and especially going to and from school.
Please take a moment to thank our town leaders, Engineering, Public Works, Police, and Public Relations! Our town staff and leaders need to hear from citizens that their efforts are working and that they are appreciated.
