Bike West Hartford recognizes the right of all community members to move through our town safely and comfortably – whether on foot, bike, car, wheelchair, or any other modality. The roadways of West Hartford are not safe, and we continue to see too many deaths and serious injuries. These tragedies are preventable. Dangerous roadways also harm our sense of community, and especially harm the mobility and independence of our children and elders.
Bike West Hartford advocates for the Town of West Hartford to prioritize the following:
- Build more effective traffic calming infrastructure, and build it faster! This includes raised crosswalks, speed bumps, curb bump-outs, and pedestrian crossing islands.
- Focus initial interventions on high-risk school zones.
- Partner with the CT DOT to implement quick-build safety infrastructure on state-owned roads including New Britain Avenue, Farmington Avenue, Albany Avenue, and others.
- Increase enforcement against speeding and running red lights.
- Protect bike lanes with bollards, flexposts, planters, and other physical infrastructure. Paint is not enough!
