Aug 5th and 6th Rides and Aug 26th Cycling Class with Leo Pon

Sat Aug 5th 2023, 10am-1pm, Bike Tour of West Hartford — Social ride, 10-12 mph. Pleasant 22 mile ride through quiet residential streets, over moderate rolling terrain and avoiding larger hills and heavy traffic. There will be a coffee/brunch stop near the end of the ride. A bike in good condition, a properly fitting helmet, a spare inner tube, water and snacks required. Bright clothing, flat repair kit, front and rear warning lights recommended. Starting Location: Meet at Elizabeth Park, West Hartford, in the parking area next to the greenhouses and the new visitor center. Enter Elizabeth Park from Asylum Ave. Additional parking is available behind the visitor center and on most side streets including Walbridge Rd.

Sun Aug 6th 2023, 10am-1pm, Manchester-Vernon-Bolton Loop — Social ride, 10-12 mph. This flat/rolling 16 mile journey passes through forests, rock cuts, waterfalls and parks in three towns. It starts at Charter Oak Park in Manchester and includes the packed gravel Cheney Rail Trail and Hop River State Park Trail, and finishes on the paved Charter Oak Greenway. There are two short sections of street riding to cross missing trail sections. Near the end of the ride, we’ll stop at Highland Park Market for a quick bite. Meet at Charter Oak Park, near the restrooms.

Sat Aug 26th 2023, 8:30am-4pm Smart Cycling Class — Thanks to Leo Pon for offering this event for FREE to Bike West Hartford members! Location: Mitchell VW 416 Hopmeadow St. Simsbury, CT. Whether you are a new rider looking for tips on making your first rides more comfortable or an experienced cyclist who wants to teach others how to feel the joy of biking, this Smart Cycling program from the League of American Bicyclists has something for you. Students will learn about choosing a bicycle, basic parts of a bike, essential equipment, as well as how to safely and comfortably ride your bike in various traffic conditions, terrain and climates. The course includes four hours of classroom instruction and five hours of on-bike instruction. This class is limited to 15 and is free for all registered AMC members (and Bike West Hartford members). This class is taught by Steve Mitchell, a League Cycling Instructor from the League of American Bicyclists, assisted by Leo Pon.
