Street Mapping Workshop – March 31, 4-5pm

Tuesday March 31st 4-5pm – GastroPark, 637 New Park Ave, West Hartford. Guest workshop leader: Jack Dougherty

Learn to record 360° camera footage while biking in metro Hartford to help make streets safer for all. Sponsored by Bike West Hartford in partnership with a mini-grant from the University College London.

Bike West Hartford is one of three organizations selected by the SpaceTimeLab at the University College of London to partner on a $6,000 mini-grant for global engagement. Bike West Hartford will receive two free GoPro Max cameras and $300 to support training workshops for participating volunteers.

Our goal is to train volunteer cyclists to wear 360° video cameras and ride around the metro Hartford region to collect street-view imagery for safety advocacy, which can be used in two ways. First, volunteers can edit and create short videos to highlight point-of-view storytelling for safer streets. See this basic sample of edited 360° video from a bike rider in a Boston neighborhood.

Second, volunteers can upload the same GPS-synced video to the open-source Mapillary platform, which extracts data about street infrastructure that UCL researchers can analyze to help improve safety advocacy in the Hartford region. See the current Mapillary view of West Hartford Center with filtered views of street infrastructure. We aim to fill in the gaps in the metro region that have not been recently recorded by higher-quality 360° camera footage.

If you cannot attend this workshop in person, but still wish to volunteer, please contact BWH board member Katie Lance or BWH ambassador Leo Pon.
